Horse Show Jumping with video
How to jump In equestrian horse show jumping there are five phases to consider.1. Approach 2. Take Off 3. Flight 4. Landing 5. Recovery/Getaway
- APPROACH - The line of approach starts after the turn. Make sure it is a straight line as the horse needs to be positioned straightand at the centre of the fence. As the horse approaches the fence it reaches forward and down with its neck and balances its body. The rider sits calmly maintaining impulsion with the legs. The rider adopts a slightly forward seat.
- TAKE OFF - The take off begins when the fore legs leaves the ground. The horse takes off a few feet in front of the jump. It stretches its body and pushes off with the hind legs. The rider waits for the fence to come to the horse, keeps the weight down in the lower leg and heels. The rider should be looking straight and allow the hands and rein to move forwards freely with the horse.
- FLIGHT - The horse raises its shoulders and arches its back. The fore legs are brought up underneath the horse and the hind legs are stretchedout away from the body. The rider maintains the forward position on the horse, keeping the weight in the lower leg with the shoulder straight and head facing forward. The rider should allow the hands to follow the horses movement and giving the horse freedom of its head whilst maintaining a steady contacton the rein.
- LANDING - The horse lands with one fore leg first and then with the other fore leg and then the hind legs. The fore legs take the impact on landing. The rider returns to the normal position. The legs should remain on the horses side encouraging the horse to balance itself after landing. The hands come back into place.
- RECOVERY/GETAWAY - The horse re-balances itself. The rider should adopt a slightly forward position. The rider can take up more contact with the bit and control the pace and direction of the horse.
