Lunging

Young horses usually start their work with this technique. Before they are even ridden it is important that they begin listening and allowing the handler to teach them. The aim is to get them moving forwards with the voice commands.

Here is a list of benefits for a young horse:

  1. To tone up muscle
  2. As part of a the training programme for a young/inexperienced horse
  3. Helps in teaching the young horse voice commands such as walk, trot, canter
  4. Helps the horse learn to coordinate its body and find his balance without the aid of a rider

Older and more experienced horses are also taught with this technique. It may be used to loosen up a stiff horse or quieten down a lively horse. It can add variety to a horses schedule and train the horse for lessons. It is also beneficial if the horse is able to work but cannot be ridden

Here is a list of benefits for an older horse:

  1. To tone up muscle
  2. To teach riders
  3. To save time when more than one horse needs to be exercised
  4. To teach the horse advanced dressage work
  5. Settling and relaxing lively horses
  6. Stretches and loosens the horses body
  7. Improves flexibility and balance
